Hummingbird Marina has reached a major milestone: one year since reopening under new management. In April 2024, the marina in Placencia, southern Belize, began a new chapter with a new name, a new team, and a bold vision. What was once a rundown boatyard on the verge of being forgotten has become a thriving, full-service destination for boaters, sailors, and ocean lovers. Today, Hummingbird Marina stands as a safe, clean, and welcoming space for those seeking a place to dock for a night, a season, or all year round.
The transformation over the past year has been nothing short of remarkable. When management took over, the marina was in disrepair. The boat ramp was riddled with potholes and unsafe for hauling boats. Machinery hadn’t been serviced in years. There was no facility for staff. The hurricane storage area had a crumbling concrete pad, and even the fuel station needed major repairs. It took vision, hard work, and over BZ$1 million in investments to begin bringing the marina back to life.
Major upgrades were completed behind the scenes, including a total overhaul of equipment, a new concrete pad for safe boat handling, and a modern fuel station. The boat ramp was rebuilt from scratch. Staff facilities were added to ensure the team had a proper place to rest, store personal items, and prepare meals. White gravel was laid across the boatyard, giving the entire property a fresh, organized feel. All of this was accomplished while keeping the marina fully operational. Through the cleanup and construction, customers continued to receive the full range of services including haul out and launch, hull cleaning, engine diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance. Even during a hurricane warning in July 2024, the marina team worked around the clock to secure all vessels safely in the hurricane-proof shed.

What was once an overlooked space is now an essential part of Placencia’s boating community. One year in, the team reflects with gratitude and pride—because while the work continues, the progress made so far is undeniable.
